How is this different from the standard 4 day Merzouga tour?

The standard route goes east to Merzouga and comes back the same way. This loop goes south first — the full Draa Valley to Zagora — then crosses the volcanic Anti-Atlas to reach Erg Chebbi, returning via the gorges and Ait Ben Haddou. You see two desert regions and no road twice; the trade-off is more hours on the road each day.

What is the Anti-Atlas crossing like?

It's the surprise of the tour: dark volcanic rock, lunar plateaus and remote oases between Zagora and Merzouga, on a good paved road with almost no traffic. Most Morocco itineraries never touch it — travelers regularly call it the most unexpected scenery of their trip.

Which desert is better, Zagora or Merzouga?

They're different, and this tour is built so you don't have to choose. Zagora is a stony desert wrapped in the Draa palm oasis; Merzouga has the giant golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, where you sleep at the camp. If you only compare dunes, Merzouga wins — which is why the camp night is there.

Honest note: this is the most diverse route we run — and the most kilometers. Every day is 4–7 hours on the road through constantly changing landscapes, with no road repeated. Day 01 :

Marrakech to Zagora through the Draa Valley (approx. 7h drive)

Pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel around 07:30. You cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with photo stops at Berber villages along the way.

Around midday you reach Ouarzazate and visit the Taourirt Kasbah, with free time for lunch. Then the road turns south into the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river oasis, stretching over 200 km of date palms, fortified kasbahs and fields of henna.

Day 02 :

The Anti-Atlas Crossing to the Erg Chebbi Dunes (approx. 6h drive)

After breakfast you head east across the volcanic Anti-Atlas — dark rock, lunar terrain and vast horizons that most Morocco visitors never see — passing remote oases and the village of Tazarine. Lunch stop at Alnif, famous for its fossils and trilobites, then on through Erfoud to Merzouga.

The evening is the highlight:

Moroccan dinner, Berber drumming by the campfire, stargazing

Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes

Luxury desert camp — private ensuite tent, hot shower, real beds

Day 03 :

Sahara Sunrise to the Dades Valley (approx. 4h drive)

You continue to Rissani, birthplace of the ruling Alaouite dynasty, then to the Tinghir oasis for a walk along the palm-lined riverbank into the Todra Gorge — limestone cliffs rising 300 meters over the walkable riverbed. Lunch at the gorge (own expense).

In the afternoon, drive the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, with sunset views over the fortified villages. Overnight at a Dades hotel — ensuite room, dinner and breakfast.

Day 04 :

Rose Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and Return to Marrakech (approx. 6h drive)

After breakfast, drive through the Valley of Roses to Kelaat M'Gouna and visit a rosewater cooperative (blooms April–May). Continue past the Skoura oasis and the beautifully restored Kasbah Amridil.

Around midday, explore UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou — the fortified village from Gladiator and Game of Thrones — crossing the river on foot, with lunch nearby.

In the afternoon you cross the Tizi n'Tichka one final time, arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon with drop-off at your riad or hotel. Four days, three mountain ranges, two deserts — no road driven twice.
