Dreaming of the big dunes? Merzouga is home to Erg Chebbi, Morocco’s tallest and most iconic dunes — which is why this tour runs 3 days instead of 2. If you’re short on time, Zagora is the nearer desert, reachable in a 2 day trip, though its dunes are smaller. Not sure which suits you? Ask us and we’ll tell you straight.

Day 01 :

Marrakech to the Dades Valley (approx. 7h drive)

Your driver-guide collects you directly from your Marrakech riad or hotel. The road climbs southeast into the High Atlas Mountains, winding through terraced Berber villages and almond groves — and since the vehicle is yours, you stop wherever catches your eye. You crest the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m), Morocco's highest paved crossing.

Descend to the iconic UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou — the backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk the earthen alleyways at your own pace and climb to the hilltop granary for views over the Ounila Valley, then lunch nearby with the ksar in view.

Continue via Ouarzazate and the fragrant Rose Valley into the Dades Valley, where red rock towers and the dramatic Monkey Fingers formations line the road. Arrive at your boutique hotel by late afternoon:

Day 02 :

Dades Valley to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) (approx. 4h drive)

After breakfast, drive deeper into the Dades Gorges, stopping at the famous Tissadrine switchbacks. Continue to Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise 300 metres above a walkable riverbed — plenty of time to walk the canyon floor or stop for a mint tea between the cliffs.

The landscape opens up as you head toward the Sahara, passing Erfoud (fossil workshops) and Rissani, the historic caravan town at the desert's edge — with optional stops at either if you'd like. By mid-afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon.

Day 03 :

Merzouga to Marrakech (approx. 9h drive)

Optional sunrise dune walk before breakfast at camp
Return to the dunes' edge by camel or 4×4, no rush

The return route passes through Ouarzazate, with time for lunch and an optional stop at the Atlas Film Studios or Taourirt Kasbah — or anything you missed on Day 1. The afternoon climb back over the Tizi n'Tichka pass brings a completely different light than the morning crossing.

You arrive back in Marrakech between 18:00 and 19:00, with drop-off directly at your riad door.
